Current Interior Design Trends:

- Neutrals , natural elements with texture. Natural wood in furniture. Dark wood furniture is out, except for black furniture or some white with black pieces.

- Area rugs that are soft and muted. Loloi rugs are hugely popular as well as Ruggable (washable rugs.) I have a Loloi and it is quite thin, but I love the soft look.

- Large muted (and abstract) landscape paintings or simple pencil drawings framed in black frames or a large (20" x 20") grouping of 6-9 framed photos that are matted in white with black frames. If you got the space, flaunt it!

- One long natural wood or black shelf to display objects. I like stacking two shelves as well.

- One sofa, two chairs that are contrasting. i.e. sofa can be in white/cream with 2 chairs in saddle. Or a reallly good look is 4 chairs around a coffee table with shelving/books.

- Candles, books, green moss in a bowl, black & white accents, greenery

- A soft muted green is back in for chairs and ottomans, etc. (I have not got into this yet.)

- Kitchen and bath hardware in a soft gold or black. (I prefer black to gold)

- White kitchen cabinets. Always a good clean look. Wood kitchen cabinets are really out. I have seen many people use HTP for their cabinets and painted them in beautiful greens, blues, whites and it is definitely a good look. Just cover up that oak. It is so dated.

- White Quartz or marble countertops (though marble is hard to keep clean. I prefer quartz) Sadly, Granite is out because it is just to busy.

- Backsplash in same material as countertops or I love Cloe by Bedrosians that is a beautiful larger subway tile. That mosiac backsplash is definitely way out!

- Painting trim, doors and walls all the same color. Its a beautiful look.

- Moulding on walls. This wall is painted a nice offset colors in muted greens, blues. There are so many  different looks and it is totally DIY. I love it.

- Paint your own vases and lamps in soft whites/blacks using acrylic paint with backing soda to give it texture.

- Painting interior doors in SW IRON ORE (soft black).I would prefer to do this on the front door and maybe a pantry door though many people have painted all of their doors this color.

 - Lighted tall skinny (black or gold) scones  and lamp that has bulbs charged with USB and remote control.

- Black canopy beds with natural wood nightstands, neutral bed coverings.

- Simple drink stands in the living room if you have limited space. (I needed this tip!)

- Did I say Greenery?!  Tall faux potted olive trees are a huge trend and a very good look.

- Styling your console tables is huge right now. Balance each end with a lamp and vase, stack books on their sides in middle with a low accessory or bowl piece.

- Follow the Studio McGee design pages. You'll find all these design trends and more.

I have been doing pastels for 3-4 years now. I'm loving it!

This is my latest of a robin's bird nest.

I tried 3 times to get this right. This is my reference photo taken by me! There was a robin's nest outside our cabin and I just reached up with my iPhone and took photos hoping some would turn out. This was with a iPhone 4 I think so pic quality not the greatest.

I thought I had lots of phots detailing my steps, but it turned out to be for the 1st two attempts! This is what I have:

I started blocking in with nupastels
I used pipe insulation to rub in the nupasel
I felt that it still was not dark enough so I added a dark soft pastel
I rubbed in the dark pastel again. I started the egg using a dark turquiose.

I just added the basic color of the egg using my turquiose lights and darks

And more dark pastel around the egg

So. I'm a true believer. It is ALL about value. It wasn't until I added the mauve pink that I felt that I     finally had a painting!

And color gets the glory. Let me know what you think!
